The Translation Programme aims to fulfill a number of strategic objectives, among which: • Enrich the Arab culture with knowledge from other sources. • Inspire cultural dialogue with the outside world through translation. • Open up new doors to sources of knowledge • Provide translated works that comply with the highest standards • Create new capable professional translators
What are the languages targeted by Tarjem? At this stage, books will be translated from English into Arabic.
Who does Tarjem deal with? The Tarjem Programme deals with publishing houses, not with individuals.
Should publishing houses be registered? Publishing houses interested in associating with the Foundation should be certified and registered in the publisher's home country.
How many books can each publishing house translate? The proposed books by each publishing house should be no more than 20.
How can the publishing house apply? Applications are to be submitted through the website after filling all the requirements. The application should include a list of books the publishing house proposes for translation.
What are the conditions that publishing houses have to follow to apply for Tarjem? The publishing house should submit an application form that includes: • A synopsis of the book • The author's biography (country of origin, earlier works, achievements (awards, appreciation certificates), etc. • Information on the translation rights and the original publishing house • A brief on the publishing house’s evaluation of the value-addition the book will provide to Arab culture • Proposed retail price of the book
How does the Foundation support the translated books? Once the list of books submitted by a publishing house is approved by committee, the Foundation will sign a contract with the publishing house, committing to purchasing 1500 copies of every translated title.
What are the publishing house commitments? The publishing house commits to obtaining all the needed approvals from the original authors and publishers. Also, the publishing house will sign an agreement with the translator to translate the book as per a pre-determined schedule.
What kind of works will be translated? The Foundation's main priority is to translate key cultural contributions published in neighbouring countries to foster cultural understanding. The Foundation will also work to develop the level of information transfer from knowledge-producing countries, especially in North America, Scandinavian countries and East Asia.
What is the contractual agreement? To safeguard the rights of all parties involved in this cooperation, there are a number of key factors that govern the contractual agreement between the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation and the translation and publishing houses, these include the following: • The Foundation retains the recording, publishing and distribution rights of future audio copies of the book. • The Foundation retains translation rights from the original publishing house. • An agreement is reached between the cooperating parties on the distribution mechanism of the translated book. • The Foundation's logo is printed on the front and back covers of all books. • The Foundation retains the right on final approval of the book.
